Have you watched our video, Attention Johnson County Parents Who Are Preparing for the 2020-2021 School Year?
If you haven't, here it is:
There are three things all parents should do to prepare for this school year before your kids head back to school. If the school year has already started, it's not too late to talk about these three things:
1) How to wear a mask/why they're important/don't touch the outside
2) Sleep or bedtime schedules/waking up or morning schedules/routines
3) Mom and Dad's expectations for the school year

Hey, everyone! Jessyka Coulter here, and today I want to talk to you, Mom and Dad, especially if you are in Johnson County here in Kansas. I want to discuss preparing for the 2020-2021 school year.
There are three things you definitely need to do this weekend to prepare. School starts in less than a month, and I want you to be ready for the school year
So, if you are a Johnson County resident, awesome! Let me know by tapping that like or heart button for me. If you're a parent that has a child going into school
here very, very soon, again, awesome! Let me know this message is relevant to you - just tap that like or heart button for me. If you're on a different platform -
Facebook, YouTube, whatever it is, awesome! Just let me know you’re here, and in the comments, let me know what grade your child’s going into.
Before we get into that, in case you're wondering who I am, again my name is Jessyka Coulter. I’m the CEO and Founder of Ace Cookie Tutoring. I'm based here in Gardner, Kansas, but I work with students around the world as well as around the entire United States. Students in the third grade and up through adults in graduate school are my specialty. I love to proofread papers and help students get the scores they want on the ACT, as well as ace their middle school math classes. I help with way more than that, but those are my three specialties.
So, if you are here, awesome! I’m glad to have you. And, again, if you are a Johnson County resident, even better. The reason I'm focusing on Johnson County is that here in Gardner (where I'm based), we're starting school on either the 8th or the 9th of September, depending on a child’s grade level.
Since it is Thursday, there’s only the one weekend left before school. Yes, there's Labor Day weekend, but Labor Day weekend is a holiday and a lot of people treat it as a mini vacation. So, no matter what you guys are doing, I just want you to spend this weekend focusing on these three things we're about to talk about.
So number one: whether we want to talk about it or not….If your child is going to school in-person, we’ve got to address masks and COVID procedures. This weekend I really, really hope you and your children sit down and discuss the right way to wear masks. I know it might seem silly, but as a camp instructor for the last week or so, I am beyond tired of asking the students to wear their masks. I'm also beyond tired of asking them to wear them properly. I don't know if your kids are doing this, but I've seen a lot of kids, kindergartners through fourth graders, wearing their masks in such a way that their eyes and nose are covered while their mouth isn’t. Yet, when I say anything, they claim to be “wearing” their masks. So, I definitely think it's worth sitting down with your child and making sure he/she knows how to wear his/her mask.
I also think it's really important to talk about not touching the outside of the mask because I don’t think a lot of kids understand why we're wearing masks, let alone what they should and shouldn’t touch. There's also the whole other idea of how uncomfortable masks are.
So, I really hope all parents encourage their kids to spend some time this weekend practicing to wear a mask, even if it’s just while sitting at home watching tv, playing a board game, or whatever. Help your children get ready to wear that mask in school for eight hours a day because it’s not an easy thing to do. I've been wearing one for about nine hours a day at camp with a couple mask breaks here and there, depending on what we're doing, and it's tough. I did not realize it was so tough. I have a lot more respect for the people that have been wearing masks since March for a long amount of time.
Prepare your kiddos for the masks and hand washing procedures. Make sure they know how important hand sanitizer is and how different the school year is going to be because of COVID.

Alright, let’s move onto tip number two. Once we take care of the COVID precautions and cope with regulations for school, the next step to get ready for the school year is bedtime. I know for me, personally, that when I stopped working frequently in March, I changed my whole sleep routine. I can only imagine what it’s been like for your kids since they’ve had five or six months off instead of the normal two or three months.
I imagine your children have a kind of crazy sleep schedule when it comes to summer time, depending on what your rules are, Mom and Dad. Your kiddos are probably not getting up on time for school right now, and depending on the age of your children and maybe their personalities, it can be a rough road to get them ready for sleep and waking up schedules and just school in general. So, I definitely, definitely, definitely recommend starting that whole process by Monday for sure. That way you've got a week, week and a half to practice. Hopefully that’s enough time for you, Mom and Dad, to get in the swing of things as well as your kids.
So, again, I hope you're getting something out of this video. If you are, great, that's what i'm going for. Just tap that like or heart button for me. And, if you've got your own kind of plan for preparing for the school year, awesome! Let me know in the comments by saying, “Go plan!” Also feel free to leave some details so I can share them with other parents and so others can benefit from your ideas.
All right. Here we go: number three. The last thing that I think you all should do this weekend to prepare for the school year is to create/decide on some expectations and to lay out those expectations for your children. I don't know if you guys do family meetings, but they’re a good way to share expectations, rules, etc. My family always did, especially if we were in trouble! Anyway, Mom and Dad: figure out what you want your kids to do this school year because there's a good chance that if they're not going to be virtual now, they might be virtual soon. Or, maybe your kids are already just going the virtual route. Here in Gardner, fifth through twelfth grade is virtual until at least the end of the month. Help your kids know what your expectations are, Mom and Dad.
I'm not trying to be preachy, but Mom and Dad, if your kids’ teachers are gonna be online on Zoom say at two o’clock, I really, really hope even if you're at work that you let your kiddos know it's super important that they actually are logged in and attending their classes just like they would be if they were in real school (in-person school). If you don't let your kids know that's something you are going to require, unfortunately I can’t guarantee your kids are going to do it. So, I definitely think, Mom and Dad, it will be worth your time and would be helpful to your children if you guys figure out what your expectations are for school this year. Decide if you expect them to spend no time on the computer - only do printed worksheets. Or, if you expect them to, like i said, show up for Zoom lessons. Or, if it's a matter of when you get home from work, everything has been completed. Whatever your requirements are, I think it's important for you guys to figure them out before the school year starts and then make sure your kiddos know what those requirements are.
So, that's what i've got for you guys today. If you're looking for some more help with education, more study tips, or some more resources, join my group here: www.facebook.com/groups/asforstudents.
